Regarded as the largest historic motorsport event in the Southern Hemisphere with close to of 400 cars competing in ten categories from the late 20’s to the late 80’s including some spectacular international race cars never seen before in Australia.
The event is held on the internationally rated Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit from 7th to 9th March, with spectacular viewing points around the circuit and from the roof top on the main building overlooking the main straight plus many other parts of the circuit.
Of special interest at the event will be the Porsche 917/30 Chassis 005 which was built at the Porsche Weissach facility for Gerry Sutterfield, a large Porsche Dealer in USA and recently arrived in Australia. The 917 cars were the fastest cars of the era and dominated the Can-Am series in 1973 with 917/30 Chassis 003 raced by Mark Donohue for Penske. The 5374 cc flat 12 cylinder, air cooled turbocharged 917/30 Chassis 005 will be participating for the first time at Phillip Island in 2025.
Once again we will welcome to the Phillip Island Classic-‘Festival of Motorsport’ Ernie and Elaine Nagamatsu from the USA with Ernie driving the replica 7/8 scale (Old Yella) OY10 Chassis 00 Corvette Special Racer. This car has been produced as a tribute to the original 00 Corvette Special raced by the legendary Dave MacDonald and is the first time seen in Australia.
Ernie will be accompanied by a friend with his 1971 Datsun 510 a model that revolutionised sedan racing in America in the early 1970’s.
Creating further interest in the 2025 event will be Keith Allers from the UK with his 1958 Lola Mk 1 sportscar with attractive aluminium bodywork. This car created great interest and brought rave reviews from the press of the day as Eric Broadley’s first built car for the rapidly expanding sports car market
The new styling came about by chance when Eric Broadley visited Maurice Gomm’s bodyshop to discuss the manufacture of a body for the new vehicle.
By remarkable chance Maurice had an unfinished bonnet that had been made for another client for which he was unlikely to be paid. This required little modification and after eying this up it was blended in with the lines of the other bodywork and proved to be a sensation. Keith will also be competing in his Morgan sports which he will use as road transport while touring Australia
With close to 1000 cars on display from the many car clubs this is a family friendly event that attracts all ages with public access to the main garage area where these amazing cars of yesteryear can be viewed close up.
Tickets for the event this year will be available on-line early in the New Year via the VHRR Website. For further information visit www.vhrr.com.au
